The New Ingredient in Sierra Mist

Sierra Mist discontinued

Fans of Sierra Mist are distraught that PepsiCo (PEP) has reintroduced an old ingredient into the beverage.

According to Consumerist, high fructose corn syrup is now being used. It was done to replace the stevia previously used to sweeten lemon-lime soft drinks. Consumers have reacted strongly to this step, stating they will no longer purchase the beverage.

PepsiCo in Sierra Mist initially replaced the high fructose corn syrup with cane sugar in 2010. That enabled the business to position the beverage as “natural.” Thus, it sets itself apart from competing soft drinks sweetened with corn syrup or artificial sweeteners. Also, it aims to win the trust of consumers who see it as a healthier option. It then changed the recipe to use stevia instead of cane sugar while maintaining the “natural” label because it comes from a plant.

Once Sierra Mist has changed its name to Mist Twist, it will again be sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. This move is interesting because customers are now more worried about what they put in their bodies than they were six years ago.

The two went back to using their old names in 2018.

Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo, the two largest soda brand firms worldwide, have been intentionally reducing products for decades. But such action has grown in recent years. It should be highlighted that both businesses are recognized for their carbonated drinks. The companies are succeeding, but they had to give up some products—including sodas—to get there.

Numerous former soda consumers have switched to healthier alternatives. According to experts, it may be partly to blame for recent cancellations. Although soda has never been seen as a “healthy option,” it will probably never totally disappear as a treat. As a temporary measure for declining sales, the major umbrella brands will continue to discontinue lower-selling soda items.

It is rare for the food and beverage sector to make unexpected announcements in the last quarter of a given calendar year, just as big firms have in the past. Some changes from the previous quarter are related to failing enterprises, while others are totally strategic in nature.
