Kresge Corporation but was replaced with Kmart Corp. in 1977. In 1962, Kmart operated its first store in Garden City, Michigan. Later, it was believed that in 1994, there were 2,486 retail stores operated by Kmart worldwide. Of these, 2,323 Kmart retail stores were in the United States only.

Why Did Kmart Close Its Stores?

Once, Kmart owned more than 2,400 stores in the country, but now only has 3. What is the reason behind it? Let’s have a look at the following:

In the 1990s, the company Kmart had massive competition from its opponents and other stores, including Walmart, Amazon, Target, and many more. It was a cut-throat competition, and the company found itself in the most significant issue because it could not compete with them. They gave up arms when they could not provide competitive pricing, which was one of the primary reasons for the company’s reduction.

Later, In January 2002, Kmart staved off bankruptcy and filed under Chapter 11. This is also one of the fundamental reasons for its closure. This has become one of the main reasons many other companies take a step back and announce closing their stores. Kmart declared it would close more than 250 locations after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Eventually, the death day for many of Kmart’s stores came on April 16, 2022. According to the news outlet, the company said, “We are shuttering the doors to the Kmart in Avenel, New Jersey, on April 16.”

One of the representatives in Avenel stated just a month before closing Kmart store’s doors permanently, “You are always thinking about it because stores are closing all over, but it’s still sad.”

One of the Kmart employees, Michelle Yavorsky, said, “I will miss the place. A lot of people shopped here.”

Apart from employees’ and people’s reviews, the 24/7 Wall Street stated, “Kmart was part of America.” Michael Lisicky told the A.P., “Everybody went to Kmart, whether you liked it or not. They had everything. You had toys. You had sporting goods. You had candy. You had stationery. It was something for Everybody. This was almost as much of a social visit as a shopping one. You could spend hours here. And these just dotted the American landscape over the years.”

Are Kmart Stores Still Open?

Yes, Kmart Stores are still open in the U.S.

The 3 remaining Kmart stores are there, and the company operates them in Bridgehampton, on New York’s Long Island, Westwood, New Jersey, and Miami.

After struggling for those years, Kmart closed and opened many stores, and now in the U.S., there is a total of 20 Kmart stores open as of March 28, 2023.

When Did Kmart Open?

Yes, you’ve heard it right! Kmart will make a comeback and is expected to be as early as possible in 2024. “Kmart closed its Meridian Mall store after the 2020 Covid lockdown, citing concerns about required earthquake strengthening. The retailer’s intentions remained unknown until about six weeks,” Mr. Dippie stated.

As many stores have already opened in the U.S.

Which Is The Biggest Kmart In The World?

The giant Kmart in the world is Guam, a huge shop that deals in a wide variety of food and non-food stuff. Guam has become a center of attraction for people from other Micronesian countries.

Wrapping Up

We hope this is a relief for those who love shopping with Kmart as they can continue shopping.
